The Mages are an old order resembling monks with a widespread respected cause. They can control the Fluid surrounding everything material but also know how to work with minds in attempt to heal mental suffering.

Mission Statement

What their creed is and what they believe in is not established in the game, however, the Mages appear to resemble monks and practice meditation and mindfulness. They can make use of the Fluid around them, using it to communicate telepathically (suggested only in the game), control or rescue the minds of others, transform it into physical power that allows them to freeze moving objects (like their opponents in battle), move them (throw and bend bodies until they break) or even destroy them (breaking an entire bridge apart). The Fluid can also create a shield to protect from physical attacks or projectiles.

It is not clear whether the sensitivity to use the Fluid is innate or can be acquired. However, since the Inquisition uses the Fluid as well, and seeing how easily humans were able to join, it appears something anyone can learn with enough practice. Both males and females can join their order.

Organisation

Structure

There are High Mages, individuals who have shown certain skills and worth to be awarded with that title. High Mage Saranthe, as Archmage, is the head of the Monastery in the mountains.

Magesmiths

Magesmiths are a separate branch within the order. Being a Magesmith allows the user to forge weapons and improve them using the Fluid instead of hammer and anvil by "breathing" on the metal and working their magic.

Member Appearance

The Mages wear brown boots and a red base layer of long trousers and wrapped light jacket. Over all that they wear a blue coat with white trims and 1/2 arms lengths. There is no distinct visual difference between disciples and High Mages.

History of the Mages

Of Orcs and Men

They have established many monasteries throughout the Empire and are well liked by the general population. Due to Barimen's plans they became more and more target of the Inquisition for the slightest misbehaviour and had to keep their heads low more and more. So much that when Arkence was incarcerated, they feared coming to her aid would put the entire rest of the Order at great risk. With the Inquisition as a shared enemy, the Mages offer their support to Arkail and Styx, not least for them rescuing Arkence for them. After the events on the Island of Laments, Barimen can finally, in all official capacity, cast blame on the Mages and declare them all outlaws, allowing him to lawfully get rid of the entire order.

By the end of Of Orcs And Men, the Mages Order has only 40 members left but every single one of those is ready to give their life in their battle against the Inquisition (and the Human Empire) at the side of the orcs.
